1. Hot gas flows inside a large diameter pipe with heat transfer coefficient of 100 W/m2 oC. In order to measure the temperature of the gas, a 3 cm long cylindrical pocket with ID = 1.25 cm and OD = 1.27 cm is attached inside the pipe wall such that the other end of the pocket is inside the pipe and is exposed to the gas stream. A thermocouple is attached at the end of pocket and temperature of 150oC is registered. If the pipe wall temperature is 140 oC and thermal conductivity of the cylindrical pocket is 50 W/mo C, determine the gas temperature. Do you expect the temperature at the end of cylindrical pocket to be same as the gas temperature? Why?
